Division 3 FAQ

What is Division 3?
Southern Connecticut Pop Warner initiated a two (2) pilot which moves the basis of participation and placement away from a weight based system to an age based system.

How long is the pilot?
We are in the second year of the 2 year pilot (Pilot has been extended)

What towns are involved?
Amity, Ansonia, Derby, Naugatuck, Newington, Seymour, Fairfield and Hamden

Did Hamden Participate last year?
Yes, 3 of out Tackle Teams made it to the Final 4

Why is this being done?
In response to growing concerns over safety and reduced participation numbers. The Pilot was initiated on a National Level

How is unlimited weight safe?
While there is no definitive answer either way, having a weight based system allows for children of different ages and levels of aggression to complete against each other. An age based system keeps children of the same physical and mental developmental level playing with their peers and classmates

Is this the future of youth athletics?
No one knows, we do know that we have seen an increase in support and participation in areas where this program has been implemented
